Uprising

Genres: Drama | History | War

Year: 2001

Country: United States of America

Director: Jon Avnet

IMDb Rating: 7.3

Using radically refashioned archival footage of the Warsaw ghetto, this interview with Jon Avnet the director of Uprising talks about Marek Edelman who is an evocative memoir of his role in the rebellion that held back the Nazis for almost a month in 1943. The film begins with the growing list of prohibitions and regulations leading to the virtual imprisonment of about half-a-million Polish Jews in an old slum district of Warsaw with inadequate space and plumbing. An overhead tracking shot shows the number of people assembled in the first months of the relocation. The daily struggle against hunger and disease, especially among the dispossessed arrivals seen in their pitful rags, is aggravated by the German demands for deportations to the east that many begin to suspect are camouflaged mass murders. By the close of 1942, people living in the ghetto realize they are doomed, and the rudiments of resistance are planned by a handful of the young, including Edelman. Following some sporadic, spontaneous fighting at the ghetto railhead, the Umschlagplatz, in January, led by Moredecai Anielewicz, the scene is set for the more famous and prolonged battle that will begin on 19 April 1943. In the intervening time, many of the ghetto residents construct hidden shelters or bunkers in the basements and cellars of the buildings, often with tunnels leading to other buildings. The handful of fighters who have weapons take to these shelters, giving the uprising the advantage of defensive positions.

But as the truth unravels some decide a resistance must be organized. The contrast of lay down and take it, or fight becomes a meaningful history lesson. This is as fine a miniseries as I have ever seen. Every single actor, from the minor ones to the big names, poured everything into their performances in order to portray these heroes as accurately and honorably as possible. I don't know enough about the actual events of the Warsaw ghetto uprising to make an appraisal of the historical accuracy of this film, but as for filmmaking and as far as its portrayal of one moment of hope in a very sad chapter in human history, this is excellent. This was not a cheap film to make and the actions scenes are not little exploding apples on an indoor film set. I've read one of the fighter's memoirs as well as seen several documented photographs of the ghetto (before it was destroyed) and I was so blown away by how accurate the portrayal of the uprising was. And that's the way it should be. When it comes out on DVD on December 18, 2001, I would for sure get it, and watch it over and over again.I really do hate to say that any film comes close to Saving Private Ryan, but Uprising does, and ironically, it is a made for TV film which makes it even that much better. The graphic violence, having a child of my own, horrorified me. See for yourself.

If you are a history buff, an action fan, or someone who just simply likes Leelee Sobieski or David Schwimmer, I highly recommend Uprising for you. No this does not mean it lacked the qualities of a exceptional film but rather it means that it made me feel sorrow for the Jews during World War II. This is as fine a miniseries as I have ever seen. And director Jon Avnet delivers a compact, credible piece of little-known history regarding the Warsaw ghetto uprising. And that's the way it should be. I will definitely and proudly include the DVD in my library. I occasionally wonder how I would have reacted if I were in that situation and would like to think that I would have gone down fighting as the individuals in the film did. He said that, in spite of some inconsistencies, it was as accurate as film could portray it. There wasn't one fighter that I did not connect with or pay attention to. The film made me feel proud to be jewish. This was not a cheap film to make and the actions scenes are not little exploding apples on an indoor film set. Of course, it affected me excellently since my mother originally came from Warsaw and I lost many relatives. Uprising has no limits in its ideas and messages. All in all, a well-done miniseries that deserves a second viewing. Moreover, the message is what needs to really be looked at in this film. So, what makes this film have such an impact? The actors and the characters they played are the answer. Most of the ghetto fighters were between 18 and 25, they had understood, what the Nazis where up to.I admire the people who fought on the Jewish side during the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising a lot. Uprising is implicit in its message and entertaining to the very last second.

How often can one say that about any miniseries. And that's the way it should be. There wasn't one fighter that I did not connect with or pay attention to. It's morally and otherwise a very good thing that some Jews fought back, although it could prevent only little of the overall damage done (in lives lost) during that hideous incidents 1933 - 1945.Humankind has got to keep looking out and bewaring of evilness, ruthlessness and plain stupidness..... Many new faces are seen in this film and they all do a fantastic job.The entertainment value is beyond comparison with any other made for TV film. Schwimmer, Azaria, Mitchell, Sobieski and Frost did, perhaps, their best performance in this film, however, it was Stephen Moyer's portrayal of Kazik that really drew me into the story. There is so much hope and strength in all of the characters that you really connected with them. This film truly earns its spot along side "Schindler's List" and "The Pianist" and is a true inspiration to all. I was totally hooked when I saw Hank Azaria in his first scene and very taken by Stephen Moyer's role. I will definitely and proudly include the DVD in my library. I was very impressed with the film, I have never jewish people portrayed in that light before and as my parents went through the Holocaust, I am very tuned into this experience. You will not walk away from this film without learning more about World War II and the Holocaust. The Polish Resistance's attitude was mixed, but my relative, who was a courier in and out of the Ghetto said that many individual Poles risked their lives to hide him. Just raw emotion and the sting of reality.

And the coarseness, the extremes, of human nature on all sides was well portrayed. If you are a history buff, an action fan, or someone who just simply likes Leelee Sobieski or David Schwimmer, I highly recommend Uprising for you. The woman who escaped with the baby at the end of the film is also related to me. David Schwimmer, Leelee Sobieski and Hank Azaria are all highly believable in their roles as Jewish resistance fighters. For a small screen effort, one has to be amazed at how closely the style resembles that of big screen efforts like "Saving Private Ryan" and "Schindler's List". There wasn't one fighter that I did not connect with or pay attention to. Not all jews were submissive. Take the time to rent this or buy the DVD when you can, it is well worth the purchase. The film made me feel proud to be jewish. I live in England and bought this film through recomendation from a friend.

The film is sticks to the events in very many details, like the polish and David-Star flag on a building, the singing in-line marching Nazi soldiers on the first day of the uprising, the guy who throws himself in the line of fire in the building to crate a distraction and let the others leave the building safely (Dawid Hochberg), the bunkers, the German commandants. There wasn't one fighter that I did not connect with or pay attention to. He said that, in spite of some inconsistencies, it was as accurate as film could portray it. But what I would like to know is why was the film not released worldwide in cinemas? The cast, particularly Donald Sutherland and David Schwimmer, was hugely impressive, the effects second to none and the subject not yet explored by any preceeding picture! So if anyone can tell me the reason for this I would much appreciate it because I believe that the film should have been exposed to a much wider audience. Just raw emotion and the sting of reality.
